As part of technological advancement, the medical world sees notable and a notable developments on day to day basis. There have been advancements in the technology used in these medical devices used in hospitals for patient monitoring and life-saving procedures. Therefore, since these devices are most often hooked up directly to the patients, they need to function perfectly.
Guaranteed Patient Safety
Even the tiniest leakage of electric current can cause severe life-threatening and safety problems for the patient. The repercussions of this current that may not be noticeable to the naked eye, like skin abrasions, tissue burns (a common issue faced by patients due to a catheter) or even cause arrhythmic heartbeat are just some of the small yet greatly problematic issues that patients face due to micro ampere leakage of current.
The IPS (Isolated Power Supply) is a device that monitors and alerts medical personnel about these leakages to protect the patient from further harm. The IPS device will not alter the machine's running since it may be connected to a life support machine and turning the current supply as a whole will not be advised.
Adding Another Layer of Protection for the Patient
When considering patients connected to medical devices for monitoring or ongoing treatment, IPS is a fundamental element in providing a safe and secure power supply. The main objective of the IPS (Isolated Power Supply) device is to bring down the inherent risk of medical electrical devices that are connected either externally or internally to the patient, from the danger of a shock hazard or electrical leakages in case one of the devices develops an electrical earth fault.
In the absence of an IPS system, a patient undergoing invasive surgery will be more at risk of micro-shock hazards since the naturally occurring human resistance to an electrical current, which is the skin, is not in place to protect them.
Maintaining an International Standard for Operation
Across the globe, the medical industry has mandated that hospitals should use an IPS, as per law. India has not yet caught up with this mandated safety protocol. The IPS device itself is a new product category for the Indian power landscape. However, it is necessary if patient safety is a priority. The hospitals currently using these machines drastically improve patient safety by meeting global standards.
Until now, for the first time in India, these systems will be manufactured in the country while adhering to the global standard and using Japanese technology by Fuji Electric India.
With this device, if a first insulation fault occurs, the power supply is not interrupted by the tripping of a protective device. The medical equipment continues to function, and fault currents will be reduced to an uncritical level for operating theatre or ICU patients. Continuous insulation monitoring ensures that a deterioration in insulation resistance is immediately detected and signaled without interruption of the power supply. Hence, continuity of operation is guaranteed.
Our IPS system is built on global standards and consists of a Medical grade Isolation Transformer (IT), Line insulation monitoring, and an Independent fault locator (optional). The IT used in the IPS is in accordance with IEC 61558-2-15 standard.
Making this product ideal to be used in Medical Establishment Group 2 locations, such as:
• Operation Theatre
• Operation Preparation Room
• Operation Plaster Room
• Operation Recovery Room
• Intensive Care Unit
• Heart Catheterization Room
• Premature Baby Room
Making sure to meet the international industrial standards (IEC standard 60364 Part 7-710 and the norms of National Electric Code 2011 (SP30:2011)) for a product with such vital necessity to the healthcare industry. Fuji Electric India now has an IPS manufactured locally based on global standards.
